October 2026 Meeting: Community Update

CDCT doesn't generally run projects itself. Instead, it helps community groups turn great ideas into reality, providing the support, knowledge and resources they need to succeed.

For many years, CDCT has worked quietly behind the scenes, helping groups whose ideas align with the Cromwell Community Plan overcome the challenges of getting started. That support can include governance, financial management, funding applications, project planning, communications, mentoring and practical advice. The Trust can also provide an umbrella structure while a group becomes established.

It's an approach that works. Initiatives such as the Lake Dunstan Trail and Mōkihi Reforestation Trust have grown into successful, independent organisations making a lasting contribution to our district. Predator Free Cromwell is now moving towards independence, while Electrify Cromwell is an example of a new community initiative taking its first steps with CDCT's support.

At their October meeting, trustees discussed how to strengthen this support by developing a clearer community project development pathway. The aim is to give groups, large or small, a practical framework to follow - from an initial idea through planning, development and, where appropriate, independence.

This includes defining what success looks like, establishing realistic timeframes, ensuring projects contribute fairly to the costs of supporting them, and developing a transparent approach to allocating seed funding. The trustees are taking part in a focused workshop later this month to further refine the development pathway and associated resources.

Have your say! Thank you to everyone who has completed the Cromwell Community Plan survey. If you haven't yet contributed, there's still time to help shape the future of our district. Complete the survey here.

And, if you have an idea that could make a positive difference in our community, we'd love to hear from you. Share your idea here.
