July 2026 Meeting: Community Update

At the July CDCT meeting, we were reminded about the incredible things that can happen when local people turn good ideas into community projects. One of the Trust’s key roles is supporting community-led initiatives - providing guidance, connections and resources to help ideas grow into successful projects that benefit our district.

At the Cromwell Chinese Village, much of the recent work has taken place behind the scenes. Working alongside Chinese academic Lu Zhihong and tourism operator Chen Huigang has provided valuable cultural insights that will soon be reflected in the miner’s hut, further footings and surrounding landscape. New interpretive signage is being developed to share stories of the Chinese miners, while cuttings from the original goji berry plants are thriving and will soon become part of the site’s living history.

Predator Free Cromwell continues to make great progress, with the community trap library proving popular and very successful. Winter trapping has seen possums take the top spot, with rats close behind! The team has also launched Tracker Tuesdays, a new whole-community initiative that will help identify exactly where predator species are active so trapping efforts can be targeted more effectively.

The Trust is also supporting the development of Electrify Cromwell, a new community initiative aimed at helping local households reduce living costs through electrification and affordable solar technology. If you would like to help grow this project, we’d love to hear from you.

Alongside supporting community-led projects, the trustees are continuing to develop practical resources to help community groups turn great ideas into successful initiatives.

Funding is only one part of the journey – advice, planning, and connections are key parts of the puzzle for the success of any community initiative.
